Probably.

If you research the original Ponzi scheme, it actually started out as a legitimate business. But he started to get new investors faster than he could actually grow the business...

It didn't help that he didn't mind playing fast and loose with the law.

If I were to guess, Madoff was more impressed with his investment savvy than was justified and placed a bet. Unfortunately, he chose to use other people's money and...
