"Is Russia 100% in the wrong here?"

Define "wrong".

On the surface, this is a pricing dispute between the Ukraine and Russia. Russia also accuses the Ukraine of stealing about 15% of the gas it transports. But, per usual, there are other games being played here. It is almost certain the real problem has to do with the Ukraine having closer relations to the West than with Moscow. And is pretty certainly connected with the Georgia thing. There have been a couple of previous cases where Russia had threatened to shut off the gas, but none of those times were when the weather was as cold as it is now.

Russia wants its old empire back. Putin sees himself as the person to get that particular ball rolling.
