It describes FOX Sports Net's aggressive "tentacles"...possibly meaning more markets for ACTV.Fox, Cablevision complete deal By Milton Kent As Keith Olbermann was plotting his departure from ESPN to MSNBC, a bigger threat to the all-sports network officially set sail yesterday as two broadcasting giants officially joined forces on a new venture. Fox/Liberty, which already controlled nine regional sports channels in an amalgam called Fox Sports Net, purchased a 40 percent equity stake in eight similar channels run by Cablevision at a price of $850 million. The 17 channels give Fox Sports Net nearly nationwide coverage in 55 million homes, and will spread its programming into such key areas as New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston. While Cablevision will retain management of its holdings, including Madison Square Garden and the New York Knicks and Rangers, Fox will be able to stick its name on all but two of the networks, and, most importantly, battle ESPN for advertising dollars and possibly telecast rights. "We have become quite a behemoth," said David Hill, president of Fox Sports and the CEO of Fox Sports Net. .... This setup, now in place with Fox's current holdings, allows its ad salespeople to sell time on three different levels -- nationally, regionally and locally -- an arrangement that ESPN can't match. Locally, viewers won't notice much of a change, as Home Team Sports, owned by CBS, is already a Fox Sports Net affiliate. But HTS and its sister station, Minnesota-based Midwest Sports Channel, are two of the few non-Fox controlled operations, and rumors persist throughout the industry that Fox may attempt to purchase control of the Bethesda-based channel, as it did last year after failing to wrest the broadcast rights to the Orioles, Washington Wizards and Capitals from HTS....
