<<<< WHy is the hatred so intense between those two countries? Kashmir can't be the only reason they have such passionate feelings against each other.>>>>

For one thing we're definitely NOT going to be able to answer this in this forum in any reasonable length of time.

Be that as it may, all this confusion arises from the historic fact that India was undivided and included the current nations of Pakistan and Bangla Desh till its independence from Britain in 1947. So all pre-1947 references to India will include these subsequent new nations.
The third (last) war between India and Pakistan in 1972 resulted in a quick and outright victory for India when India took about 200000 POW's in what used to be East Pakistan which was then liberated as the new nation of Bangla Desh.

BTW, PBS is running a 3 part (2 hrs each) mini series on the "History of India", from 50000 BC to the present time. It's every Monday for 3 weeks, starting 1/5/09.

Recently watched "Lord Mountbatten: The Last Viceroy"

It could give you some historical perspective. Someone recommended it to me after the Mumbai attacks.
