I think Ethane rejection is only part of it. FWIW, Credit Suisse had a brief note on this subject back in November titled Ethane Rejection Could Increase 'Phantom' Supply which I've made available again at this link:

The other part of the miss IMO is that most gas draw prediction models did not not accurately account for the more numerous and longer industrial shutdowns over the holiday period this year. You've likely heard that many auto assembly plants are shut down for the entire month, and they are not alone. Many other less publicised industrial users have been in a prolonged holiday shutdown mode to get their product inventories down. Nobody wants to carry large inventories of slow selling product in a recession.
