The founding fathers must have envisioned that politicians would rise from the ranks of the successful and only serve after they had made their mark on life. They were mostly like that.

Today we end up with people like Clinton and Obama who wanted to be elected to BE someone instead of People like Presidents Reagan and Bush 41 who had already accomplished much and got elected to DO something. It isn't even a generation remote from greatness to the depths we now find ourselves in.

Most pols seem to make decisions based on whether doing the right thing will get them reelected or not

Change that to doing a thing and it is even more right on the money.

Coburn is one of the last of the citizen statesmen crowd, doesn't care about getting reelected

We need more like him. McCain finally gained a measure of fiscal conservatism over the last few years while preparing for his futile run for the Presidency. I eagerly wait to see which McCain returns to the Senate.
