Considering that I think that energy investments are going to be one of the biggest movers in the near future, I don't consider this discussion to be OT.

I think that it is pretty obvious that Obama is not friendly toward the coal industry.

And I think that Obama qualifies as being uninformed on two key factors in the decision...1. Global warming (both existance and cause) and 2. The contribution of coal plants to worldwide greenhouse gas levels.

Of course the irony is that China despite pushing solar, and Three Gorges, and NG for transport, and gazillions of battery powered bikes, and curtailing IC motor bikes.. needs so much power that coal will be required there for a long long time .. They are aiming for about 5% nuclear powergen .. France is over 70% nuclear.. Major countries average is I think about 15%...

So unless the US stops coal production outright.. Preventing new coal plants is really mostly feelgood stuff... will help local air and pollution for sure.. but does not address climate change crowds concerns.. unless they are not thinking outside the box...

"The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it."

The guy is brilliant but stupid. I never trust people who talk like that. What the hell does he stand for.
