The electric car uses much, much less total energy to go down the road.

In your oil burner the vast majority goes out the tailpipe and the radiator. In excess of 80% of the original energy.

The next questions after you realize that Internal combustion engines are almost twice as efficient at converting BTUs as electric cars are: 1) How much potential improvement remains untapped for each? and 2) Is one source more available than the other?

If our brightest minds go to work both can be improved.

A friend as a Ford with the belt transmission from Audi that is twice as efficient as traditional transmissions. If all IC vehicles had that we would get more mpg.

Currently electricity is not overly abundant, but has the potential if we destroy nature to put up wind and solar farms of being plentiful. Nuclear would help make electricity plentiful.
