McCain, Feingold want to eliminate earmarks with new bill

Sens. John McCain and Russ Feingold unveiled earmark-reform legislation Wednesday that they hope will all but eliminate a practice they consider corrupt and obsolete.

Probably they are pushing back, hard, because of the dirty trick Reid - and other Senators - pulled late last year... when they put some weasel words into the Senate/House conference's write-up of the Ethics Bill.

Which, PREVIOUS to their added weasel words paragraph, had actually succeeded in requiring that ALL EARMARKS be made public, and all be subject to floor votes... but, AFTER REID's weasel words, the vast majority of all Earmarks (including the very largest of them) were made capable of slipping through a loophole that doesn't define them as 'Earmarks' any longer - if the spending is directed at a government agency prior to be sent to it's final destination at some private corporation....

(Bill Moyer's Journal did an excellent piece about Reid's trick on the program last night. They paired up with a couple of investigative journalists and non-profit 'government watch' type of orgs... and presented the results they found after digging laboriously through every single line of every single appropriations bill from last year. The discovered that the MAJORITY of all Earmarks are still being hidden from the public's view as a result of Reid's trick when he amended the Ethic Bill.)

No doubt McCain and Feingold (who have each campaigned *hard* against the abuse that secret Earmarks are) took Reid's trick rather personally... because they are back trying to kill it this year! :-)
