The last third of the 20th century and the first few years of this one will be perceived with amazement in about 50-75 years.

In my studies of Russian history long ago, I recall - vaguely - studying the aptly named Time of Troubles. The last few years will be named the Stupid Era or something similar. It is incredible that our government was at the same time turning a blind eye to enormous financial crimes while incurring enormous unfunded liabilities and prosecuting enormously expensive wars. It is even more incredible that those with power over the purse strings knew very well what was going on and understood the implications. Yet, with a few notable exceptions - Ron Paul and David Walker come to mind - they simply sat idly by.

The historical lessons were there for all to see. Perhaps something good will come of it but I doubt it. Enduring economic stupidity coursing through a familiar and well-worn channel seems to be the hallmark our species.
