I totally understand what you are talking about there.

It is similar to what happened to me here on SI a few years ago. My views on the market were easily reinforced by others on SI because I naturally filtered in those views that agreed with my own. It can happen with economic/market views and it can happen with politics. On the focused political threads you can sometimes see what amounts to a hysteria when in reality, it just ain't that extreme.

The fact is that I have a very large number of liberal friends and we get along just fine and I have yet to find out that any of them are sacrificing babies or kicking dogs. And my conservative friends for the most part are not serial killers. I still can't find any libertarians whom I like, but oh well, we are a solitary lot anyway.

I think your point (or what I think your point is) is a good one....it's important to drink someone else's koolaid along with your own just to keep a sense of balance.
