Asking a candidate for any office, not the least of which is a national office, "what do you read"....(that was the question) is a perfectly appropriate question. Nobody knew much about her, what she believed or practiced as a political philosophy. It was not a gotcha, no matter if Couric said it snarky or not (and she didn't).

Palin interpreted the question as some how a slight on her Alaska roots. Why? no one knows. Except her. It follows that her completley funbled answer had to be the fault of someone else, not her.

Her interview with Ziegler follows much the same pattern.
