Russia Turns The Gas Back On

ananova.com

Russia says it intends to resume gas supplies to the European Union on Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for the Czech government, which holds the rotating EU leadership, said Russia had announced it would start pumping gas at 0700GMT.

"We greatly welcome this announcement," said Radek Honzak.

EU energy ministers have been holding an emergency meeting in Brussels to try to agree long-term strategies to avoid a repeat of the crisis.

A dozen EU countries were left on reduced Russian gas deliveries in sub-zero temperatures.

The row began when Russia decided to turn off the gas tap to Ukraine over claims that Kiev has not paid its bills.

Russia then claimed Ukraine was siphoning off Europe's supplies to offset its own shortfall.

::The Confederation of British Industry has called on the EU to boost its gas storage capacity, advancing a new generation of nuclear power plants, and harnessing more wind and tidal power.

"Owners of capital will stimulate working class to buy more and more of expensive goods, houses and technology, pushing them to take more and more expensive credits, until their debt becomes unbearable. The unpaid debt will lead to bankruptcy of banks, which will have to be nationalized, and State will have to take the road which will eventually lead to communism."

Karl Marx, 1867
