There is truth in the not caring idea, but I still contend that population pressure has been the root cause of most if not all wars. The one big argument I still haven't answered is how The 100 Years War lasted while Europe lost one third of its population to the plague. But I'll make up an excuse for that one sometime. <G>

<<The real problem is fundamental human GREED as defined by caring for oneself significantly more than caring for others.>>

In contrast to wealthy individuals, middle-income individuals cannot really afford to speculate with their money - as they may need it for basic living expenses. Therefore, they will only be encouraged to do so if they feel a strong emotional inducement.

This inducement is usually in the form of being jealous of their friends and/or relatives who have allegedly made money in a particular asset. Almost no one wanted to buy technology shares until they heard stories of how friends of their friends had become millionaires in 1999 or 2000. Hardly anyone bought real estate as an investment until they heard stories of how the people down the street became rich from buying several homes on zero money down. Jealousy begets greed, which then encourages middle-class participation.

"Why not us" was the cry of the Miami Dolphins as they entered the playoffs.

They lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
