Once you've assembled a crowd (via mass media in this case)it's easier to sway them collectively. They lose their individuality. The govt knows that. Marketers know that. Coup leaders prioritize taking control of the media for good reason. None are looking out for the good of the individual People buy SUVs and lavish houses and overpriced designer crap because they're brainwashed. While they'll always believe and convince themselves otherwise, they're victims of slick marketing. It's what makes them feel good and accepted within that particular trend.
