the young get no benefits though. So somebody who makes 500K and has to pay into the ponzi SS scheme is really not that much worse off than a 30 year old making 100K who has to put in the full 12K.

The whole "social security is not a tax" line was something propogated by AARP. Its a tax, and for the young, the biggest one, with no payout. Just make everybody suffer equally and disburse the thing I say.

Ork, it's SOCIAL SECURITY, not a retirement plan. The words themselves mean a program designed to ensure that some level of basic well-being is maintained for the elderly and disabled. The whole conservative argument that it should be treated more like a retirement plan ignore the whole reason for the program IMO.

If you get past the idea that it is a retirement plan, then I think the idea that it is regressive is actually rather silly.

Re: but to say people who earn 500k should pay more than those who earn 100k is ridiculous when they get the same benefits

The social security program acts to stabilize society - if people are desperate and starving they have a tendency to break into your house, steal stuff, and leave a big mess.

In many ways, the rich benefit far more from the social stability created by the social security program than does the middle class. They should pay at the same rate - or higher.

Alternately, there is the torches and pitchforks income realloction plan often used by the starving and desperate....
