How much does it cost to make Citi whole, and what happens if we can't (would make Lehman look like nothing)? In now seems real possible the the Federal gov may have to nationalize the vast majority of the banking system. WTF would that look like; how would it work? Currently, I don't think Citi is that big a problem. It has a number of assets it can sell. And why would we nationalize the banking industry? Right now, I think the biggest problem is confidence......we have lost faith in our institutions because they have fukked up badly. I think we need to be focused on restoring confidence. BTW the selling of corporate bonds, which died after LEH, is pretty much back to normal.......an indication that the credit markets are starting to work again.

Maybe goldman winds up with ML much like JPM got smith barney. Then they could merge BA and CITI and separate out good bank and bad bank (bad assets). Bad bank can make money on lousy assets appreciation from bargain basement price of zero they carry them out. Good bank now national in scope can sell off some duplicated branches etc and prosper. This takes care of the future of GS, Citi, BA and ML all in one shot. The real joke is that just one month after BA pressured into buying ML, now the govt thinks financial supermarkets no good and force C into jettisoning SB.
