I did both Grace. I said I didn't "replace" it - with a home of similar value. I bought a super cheap foreclosure in a much cheaper part of the US, fixed it up, got HELOC, have been living off the HELOC, and now I'm at the place where I need to sell it and repeat the process. Otherwise, I'll have to get a job and pay the man taxes! Or, as you say, I can beg for a bailout..
