Despite doubling the taxes in Fairfax over the past 7 years we have a $650 million dollar shortfall, which is larger than the budgets of the Police, Fire and Rescue, Sheriff, Libraries, Parks and Health Department combined! During my opponent's term as Budget Chair, the County has failed to prepare for bad times. Economic fluctuations are a natural to cycle between economic prosperity and downturns. Our County has been in similar situations before, yet in her 17 years as budget chairman, my opponent has done nothing to prepare the County for the budget shortfall we currently face. While other localities are facing shortfalls as well, none are as large as Fairfax County's in part because we failed to prepare: · Spending recklessly during good times. In the past six years, because of unrestrained spending our budget has grown over a billion dollars more than the growth in population increase or inflation.
