[asking Q's on conf. calls]

<< I still need CPR. :)) I was so nervous I could hardly speak. My hands were shaking. My mouth went dry. I don't know what I expected. >>

yep, that's how i felt when i chirped up on the previous call.

<< I guess I thought Seamans was going to shoot me or something. >>

given where's he's at on the TI C6x, i think you, i, and the rest of SI are flying well below radar.

["80% of initial contracts"]

Did you mean dollars, modems, lines, or contracts?? DMT or CAP??

I am having a difficult time warming up to the new "Gorilla" when Alcatel seems to be winning contracts left and right. However shaky these contracts may be, their customers would have to be dissatisfied to look elsewhere. That is an advantage. I am a consultant and have seen first hand how companies can get in deep and then go through much pain to switch vendors. Maybe it is easier with modems. WSTL's habit of losing contracts which they were favored to win gives me a queasy feeling.

Do you know when we will get to vote on the merger??

[Conference Call]
Pat: I heard your good question on the CC. It was nice to hear your voice after all the input you have given to SI. I thought GS's answer was politically correct; what else could he say? If GTE makes a significant ADSL announcement in November, then we are off to the races in style. If not, l look for a general decline in the stock for at least 3 more months.
I was struck by the lack of information he provided in response to the question on the mysterious "3" signed but not announced contracts. He seemed especially defensive. I came away from the call with a very uneasy feeling. If I were a prospective new investor in WSTL, I would expect more from a CEO than he provided. His knowledge of his product line seems especially thin. I'm afraid the market will not respond favorably to this poor performance. I am staying with my investment for only one reason. I think there are signed contracts with expected delivery schedules in place. This is the only rationale that I can come up with to account for the recent job openings at WSTL. If GS is hiring without contracts in hand, then the WSTL board of directors is not taking care of business. I'm looking forward to your comments on the conference call.

pat:

RE: "I was so nervous I could hardly speak. My hands were shaking. My
mouth went dry. I don't know what I expected. I guess I thought Seamans was going to
shoot me or something."

Maybe it had something to do with the "Mother of all Freudian Slips" that GS let out at the start of the call:

"our murder ... er, merger with Amati"

Take it from a veteran of hundreds of calls over the years. After a while you're doing well if you can avoid falling asleep between the time you push the "1" and your name is called.

Regards

<< I was so nervous I could hardly speak.>>

I know the feeling - I asked a question before you and due to my wife's illness, I had to ask with a six-month old gurgling in my arms...

yikes.
