That is the problem, though. Who says it will be two years? The best historical model is the Long Depression, and it was almost two decades for Britain. And it weakened them enough so that WWI broke the Empire.

There was no attempt to stimulate the economy, it was felt at the time that government had no role in managing the economy. The Long Depression scared enough people that minds started to be changed. Which is why FDR was given a blank check to deal with the Great Depression, no one wanted a repeat of the the Long Depression.

The fundamentals of the recession will not change.

Not sure I agree completely with this. A great deal of the trouble has to do with consumer confidence...the erosion of which starts a chain reaction.
