I am not sure. Wasnt it turks who owned some of the land, not arabs. Look i dont say that jews are 100% in the right or pals 100% wrong. I maintain history doesnt matter. In each decade since the 40s there are facts on the ground. Each time the arabs decide to go to war rather than strike a deal which they always consider unfair. Keep in mind arabs were on the nazi side during the war and figured a german victory would end up in death to jews who lived in the mideast including palestine but larger numbers were in iraq and other places. German defeat prevented that desired outcome and instead gave impetus to creation of israel. Arabs still managed to kick the jews out of their homes throughout the middle east when they started the 47 war. In that sense arabs won because there were more dispossessed arab jews than pals but who cares, they were jews and thus fair game. Sarman, Ted and Chrissy wont tell you these annoying details.

My understanding is that a lot of the land that forms Israel today was bought from absentee arab owners, while palestinians who had been unrecorded "owners" and who had been living on it and considered it theirs were being dispossessed and moved off by the zionist movement. It's unlikely these people will forget who replaced them on this land, despite the fact that the 1858 Ottoman land decrees had quietly deprived them of legal ownership.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Remember, too, at the start of the 1948 war, there were more Arabs than Jews. The Arabs fled before the Arab nations attacked Israel. All that property owned by those Arabs was confiscated by Israel. After the war, those Arabs were not allowed back into Israel. To this day, Israel has made no attempt to provide these people reparations for their property, most of whom landed in refugee camps. Its this kind of dirty dealing that Israeli supporters here in this country work very hard to ignore but the Palestinians have a hard time forgetting.
