"Rescue of Banks Hints at Nationalization "

They aren't going to loan money, no matter how much we gift them with it. Might as well go all in socialist. At least the government WILL loan the money.

Besides, the effect of the money we've been giving the "too big to fail" banks is that they aquire the "small enough to fail" banks, thus becoming even BIGGER than they were when they were "too big to fail". Isn't that just the opposite of what we'd prefer, many small banks, no one of which was "too big to fail"?

What we have is a weird, shadow nationalization,” said Karen Shaw Petrou, managing partner at Federal Financial Analytics, a consulting firm in Washington. “The government does not want to and should not want to own banks. But if they get forced into that situation, they should resolve that situation. Here, what you have is a huge diversified financial services industry with recognized losses and looming losses in every aspect of its operations. There’s nothing straightforward about it.”

My take is that we are so afraid of nationalization because it smacks of socialism. This somewhat irrational fear is instilled deeply in the American pysche and will keep us from nationalizing the banking industry no matter how bad it gets. We will find a way out.
