WAY COOL!

The USB 3.0 specification guarantees an increased performance of 10 times compared to the capabilities of the current USB 2.0, providing a bandwidth of 600 MB/s second. Devices employing USB 3.0 specifications are planned to be available to consumers in 2009 or 2010 and would be backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.

Let us know if you hear how they will do this. This is the type of thing I used to design at HP but at much slower rates... I remember starting work on a 250MB/s module back in the early 1980s where the 1300nm LEDs and PINs cost $1/nm or $2600 before any electronics or packaging! By the time we released the product, it was around $500 and would only go in very high end workstations, servers, etc.

600 MB/s... probably VCSELs and PINs at 820nm..... but just guessing... I wonder who will supply the modules and electronics. This won't be cheap compared to USB 2.0 so it will probably be on high end stuff at first for connecting external HDs.

Thanks
