Hi Money Penny,

What I found funny was Penney's tone-deafness about what a broad readership would find compelling about her losses. The name "Yolanda" wasn't part of it for me. What I think is most interesting about Penney's blog pieces has been the evolution of the nature of her concerns and the development of a wry sense of humor as she gets some (healthy, IMO) distance from that very rarified NYC intelligencia life.

I have great respect for the fact that she *earned* her money, but I do believe that enormous amounts of money earned in a relatively quick period have a tendency to exert a dampening effect on one's perspective.

I think you and I might have a commonality of histories-- I was married to multimillionaires, not once but twice-- I know the sense of impermeability that money gives. I know, too, having chosen a different path the third (charmed) time, that the fear of "going without" the pedicures, household help, and second and third home is much greater than the living without. What Penney is very generously (and bravely) allowing us to do, IMHO, is watch this process.

And I know what you mean about inexpensive highlights, believe me! I used to spend a grooming day on the upper east side every month, complete with a luxurious lunch. Now my stylist and I barter services: color for reflexology and health counseling. :-)
