Golfer's remark was that a college degree was not worth anything. If knowledge has no value, as he implies, then I might be inclined to agree. However I don't because knowledge has a benefit other than a means of earning a living. OTOH, if dirt under your fingernails and a "safe" weekly paycheck are all that you value, then I won't quibble that that isn't best for you.

When I was starting college, I worked summers as a helper in a machine shop. The machinist I assisted (a nice guy) made screws out of silver for a Monsanto machine. He made screws all day every day and had been doing it for over 20 years. I remember one particular conversation. He said " kid, get an education, or you will end up like me". So I took his advice, later paid off my loans, and never looked back. I do have an old Bridgeport in the garage for "fun", but don't rely on dirty fingers for my livelihood.
