The problem these days is that one person's patriot is another's tyrant.

Those who are "protecting" us proclaim their patriotism loudly - even as they steal our freedoms.

Those whose greatest fear is their own safety willingly sacrifice their rights; to their patriotic protectors, they give the power of tyranny.

All very well, except that Jefferson was living (luxuriously, as usual) in Paris, 5,000 miles from the minor antigovernment rebellion in the United States ("Shay's Rebellion"). Earlier, when he got news that the British were approaching Monticello, he took off fast through the woods. Seems to me a rather complacent commentary on some farmers getting shot by soldiers.
