I think it's the player that carries information about what zone it's supposed to be in. That is, a player sold in the US might have a zone A chip on board; a player sold in Asia might have a zone B chip, and so on. But my question is how is the player going to know how many zones the disk has been through? One possibility is that the zone change info is written to the disk by each player of a different zone.

Just guessing, here.
