They seek refuge in the cleverness of mendacious lies, even until they find themselves lying to themselves, at which point they just convince themselves its normal and continue. They are further enabled and emboldened by people like Shepard sitting on the sidelines berating those who call them on it. "I've said this a million times....BUT....you really have to wonder" I wonder what it is they think they are rehearsing for, or if this is all there is to it, if there will ever be a second act or a sequel.
