I am for reopening the discussion from the inside out and going over it thoroughly, something I doubt our leadership has the stones to do.

Personally I lean far more to the liberal interpretation of torture than most people claiming to be liberals would even venture.

I am opposed on principle to any form of force or coercion that violates one's conscience, beyond the prosecution of a criminal, fighting for justice, and self defense.

However, I think we have a much bigger issue to deal with before we talk about the treatment of prisoners and that is how we define a 'captive'. We are very wishy washy in this area because we want to have our cake and eat it too ... which is where our troubles with each other begins.

I don't like fighting and only consider it as a last resort but where engagement in deadly combat is concerned, I take the deadly part very serious. My policy is surrender or die, with the latter assumed a priori as the primary agreed upon mutual objective.

Personally, the only person who would ever be a captive of mine in open deadly conflict would be someone who has surrendered. My standard for surrender is to abandon the fight while agreeing to relinquish control over anything that could harm me, including information. If you haven't done so, you are either still fighting or dead. If you have done so, you have the right to demand humane treatment from me while being held as my captive.
