This might have also been a bit of a defensive play - to keep this IPR away from Broadcom. Qualcomm has been licensing this IPR from AMD since 07, and I would think that Qualcomm has invested alot of resources into it - I'm not sure how easy it is to change over to PowerVr.

Who knows how many years Qualcomm's license from AMD was good for. If this license was due to expire or up for renewal, then it was probably a good idea to keep it out of Broadcom's hands.

Just recently, Broadcom purchased AMD's digital tv operations for 192 million.

Actually, a big part of AMD's mobile business is based in Finland, so now there will be a Qualcomm unit right next door to Nokia's HQ! The company AMD acquired in Finland some two years ago was called Bitboys. en.wikipedia.org
