When cruising we were underneath any wave activity but it can reach surprisingly deep during big storms such as the North Atlantic in the winter. We were with the Nimitz group during one such storm and we were coming up to periscope depth to do radio traffic and such. I was the below decks watch so I was going to shoot the trash disposal unit when we got there and I was instructed to do so. We compacted all of our trash into metal cylinders that were weighted with lead plates and we dropped them out the bottom of the sub through a small torpedo type tube. Anyhow this room is very small and I'm sitting on the one counter with my feet up on the wall in front of me. We are rocking from side to side so much that I'm going from almost standing on the far wall to laying on my back looking up at my feet. I assumed we had to be at PD so I called the Chief of the Watch on my head set and asked him when I could shoot and he said when we get to PD. I said well where in the world are we and he said 400' clearing our baffles. I thought boy am I glad I'm on a sub and not riding the surface for the next 90 days.
