"There is a lot of confusion on this issue"

Do you remember when the USS Vincennes shot down that Iranian airliner because it got confused with an Iranian F14 that was taking off in the same area? That was in 1988. The Iranian revolution occurred in 1979, so the newest F14 they had was bought sometime before then.

F14s of that vintage had a mean time before failure of something like 100 flight hours. And major maintenance at something like 20 or 30 flight hours. The engines had to be run regularly or the bearings would flat spot leading to engine failure. Part of the terms of sale in those days of leading edge military equipment was that no one but the Israelis got training in maintenance and repair, they had to hire our people for that, and parts were tightly controlled. So why were the Iranians still flying at least 1 F14 9 years after the revolution?
