It is just a continuation of what has been-lol. Banks and hedge funds were involved in worldwide gambling with huge leverage. Government was not allowed to regulate them and they went hog wild. then the markets turned agains tthem and this is the result.

Simple as that. In as much as they were gambling with hundreds of trillions of dollar and our GDP is only 14 trillion, it is easy to see how they may have lost more money than the worlds GDP's combined.
