There have already been big changes made and inventions prepared. - Peak People - 2037 [ contraceptives invented and used many decades ago] - Cyberspace revolution well underway. It is 10,000 times more important than the industrial revolution [that's just for people - for metaphysical purposes, it's more important than all of biological history since DNA was invented] - Auto-drive electric city vehicles - Traffic management systems meaning no more traffic lights or traffic jams. - Coal, bitumens, nuclear, photovoltaics, CO2 liquefaction and burying at the bottom of the ocean [if necessary], cellulose, wind for the energy that is needed. BP developed Orimulsion decades ago and is still available if needed. - Eugenics continuing apace [women doing most of it, as usual] Oil is part of the past with a reducing part of the future. Since the 1970s, its share of GDP has dwindled. The older among us can remember checking oil when putting more fuel in, and often adding some. There used to be repair garages everywhere. Roads were slippery with leaked lubricant. Oil was everywhere. Oil has had its day. Sure, it's still part of the present, but don't bet on $140 a barrel, let alone $200 a barrel in 2007$$ for any but a fleeting moment. There has been 100 years of pricing and the peaks and troughs give a good guide to the limits of volatility. They will not increase. < despite the end of cheap oil, we have not done anything of substance to prepare for its demise. > We are well-positioned to handle a huge shift from oil if needed. It would take barely a decade. Mqurice
