Lots of the Hamas people are crazy, but they're also not stupid.

Hmm.. I'd think that anyone who believes they'll collect 72 virgins and eternal blessings in exchange for violently forcing others to accept their religious views (or die) is crazy.

What folks miss is that Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is directly tied to the Wahabbi of Saudi Arabia. And Al Qai'da, via Egyptian Islamic Jihad leader, Ayman Zawahiri, is also tied directly to the Muslim Brotherhood via the teachings/writings of Sayyid Qutb. And the original "islamic revolution" resides with the Muslim Brotherhood, not the Iranians. They've been promoting it since the 1920's, if not earlier.

The bottom line is that these folks are not willing to settle for just conquering Israel. Their agenda involves restoring the entire Islamic Caliphate and expanding it to eventually include the whole world. And until the world recognizes this, we're going to have a Mid-East policies that are doomed to failure. We might have been able to reason with other totalitarians, but these are people who believe that Allah is on their side and they won't quit.. ever.. (at least until all the infidels are dead). Same thing with Hizballah, albeit from the Shi'a side.

So, I just don't share your confidence until the Palestinians figure out that their only chance for a better life (outside of martyrdom) is relegating themselves to peaceful co-existence with the Israelis.

Btw.. I'm not a "shill" for the Israelis. In fact, I'm often offended at their anti-US activities (Pollard.. USS Liberty.. etc) I'm just a pragmatist, who's looking at the overall picture and I'm not just not seeing the prospects for peace until the religious fanatics are disarmed and relegated to non-militant activities.

Either way, Obama needs to stand firm in not recognizing Hamas until they agree to work towards actual peace (not just truce) with Israel. And he needs to pressure the Israelis to continue holding their hands out to non-Hamas leadership. But he should not interject into the peace process unilaterally, but only offer "honest broker" facilitation.

What I'm curious about is how Obama will deal with Pakistan? That's a civil war in the making and eventually we're going to be involved in taking sides.

I do not think you can get the Palestinians to accept any solution other than the extinction of Israel. Until that changes a solution seems hopeless. But who knows maybe I will be suprised.
