Bill I have had licensed plumbers to my house twice in 19 years and licensed electricians 3 times. I was very pleased with the quality of work they did. IN fact after many years all of it works like new. They did what I asked, they did it on time and they did it with what I considered reasonable costs for quality work. I do not know if they were union or not but I know the electrician I hired twice may have been as he hired people through an apprentice program. Thankfully there are some good tradesman out there.
