Both liberal and conservative are pretty much straight foreward antithetical ideas, for all practical purposes. And people of either persuasion pretty much follow the dictionary definitions:

Conservative, is the idea of "conserving the staus quo" abiding by the cultural norms and mores passed down through the ages.

It might be noted that cultures are always antiquated as they are all created in the past. In the present day of our cultural explosive evolution the degree of antiquation becomes increasingly important to the very suvival of our species.

E.G. The problem we are having with the middle east is primarily a problem of our dealing with a 13th century culture in the nuclear age.

liberals on the other hand are simply more open to change and attendant policies.

My own opinion is that if we, as a species, do not learn to modernize our thinking very quickly we will doom ourselves to extinction.
