The drug violence in Chihuahua state and other Mexican states will run into some very tough civilians.

The reason the Mexican Revolution was successful is that its best fighters were from Chihuahua state. They were the ones who got rid of the formidable Apaches and the Comanches. In return for their efforts, these fighters got land, which oligarchs tried to take over.

Big mistake. These tough hombres revolted, many joined Pancho Villa's cavalry and were successful in asserting their rights. Their descendants have established a culture of toughness, self-reliance, entrepreneurship and hard work which has made the region the richest in Mexico.

These are generally not people to mess around with.

If they see that the government cannot control the drug guys, they will take matters into their own hands. Sounds like they are well on the way to doing so.

Death squads are bad news, naturally, but they are the expected result of governmental failure. The drug guys have bought themselves a fight.
