the only time any of my dogs have been leashed is when K was a kid and I took her to the park....Levi was 125 lbs and just his being was intimidating and he loved kids....I swipe of the tongue across the face and a 2 year old would go down..hehee!

K also used a leash a few years back when she walked the country side around the house...but that was more for her protection and the because of cars that traveled about....

Now, I carry a leash when I'm out...but I have yet to need it.

I just might be lucky.....I"m on 2 acres with a 25 mph road along the southern line....and a private 5 mph dirt road to the North...so I even let them out for some times alone....if they bark I know it's time to open the door.

I don't know about training, but we got a harness that works better to preclude pulling. It has little straps that go under the front arm pits of the dog, looping back up to a ring on the collar, and the leash is clipped to that. When the dog pulls, the straps pull up on the armpits and apparently the dog doesn't like it. Our dog quit pulling almost as soon as we tried it. Our son's dog did too, just a few months ago when we recommended it.
