granite counter tops, high end professional grade ovens, stoves, refrigerators, furniture grade cabinets... Having a nice looking house is not "extravagance". It does not matter whether someone cooks or not. 20-30K investment in how the kitchen looks is cheaper than a new car, lasts as long or longer and increases resale value, so it even has some positive return. :) On the other hand, personally I am putting the money into the market right now. Granite countertops will have to wait until next bubble. ;)
