"Deregulation" and "laissez faire" have been the mantra since the Reagan days. Deregulation perhaps. Laissez faire, not so much. And "the mantra", effectively means lip service. We haven't had anything that resembles laissez faire even vaguely. We have had deregulation, but at the same time we've added other regulations, with the number of regulators, the budgets for regulatory agencies, the number of regulations, the pages of regulation, and the compliance cost of the regulations all going up in most years.
