Way OT: Dear Koan, hopefully the thread will tolerate a literary discussion as long as it's near midnight and nothing too exciting is happening in the overseas markets!

Of course I would never use my name in the same sentence as the Nobel committee but I did like some of Yukio Mishima's writing. I think our difference is just another illustration of how taste in fiction is such a highly personal thing.

I've learned a lot about that from my son and daughter-in-law who are both published novelists. They met in, and both graduated from, the Creative Writing Program at UC Irvine, which is thought by many to be the top program in the U.S. (Michael Chabon, Alice Siebold, Richard Ford etc.) I believe your son is at UC Irvine if I recall correctly, working with Don Blake or Sherrie Rowland(both of whom I consider good colleagues). Two great strengths of UCI: atmospheric chemistry and fiction writing.

At least we have Hermann Hesse in common. Siddhartha is one of my favorite stories, one I keep re-reading periodically.

Best regards,
oilgeezer
