Ah! Then what you need is someone experienced with the paradigm atom monitor or Focal Sib, eigh? Where's Allen when you need him?

Those Atoms look like they'll fill the bill to me, but I'd certainly want to listen to them first (even with my ears).

Are you wanting to get self powered speakers or are you going with a dedicated amp and match them up yourself?

Which ones does William lean toward?

>>i have the search down to paradigm atom (about 300) and sib by focal (about 650). can't decide still...<<

Paul -

Ah, so you're familiar with Paradigm already. In that case, do trundle down to your dealer and audition the Studio 20s. They sound like speakers that should cost at least two grand.

The kid has young ears. Baby them.

- Allen

Paul, I just spent about 30 minutes watching William play.

All pieces I like a lot. It's fascinating watching William. All sorts of questions go through my mind -

What is William hearing?
How is it different than what I hear?
How did he get so patient?
How is his thinking about the architecture of the harmonic relationships influencing his developing style?
Is he beginning to form opinions on tempo etc?
What is his teacher thinking?

In some ways it's more interesting watching a player develop than watching a fully developed pianist play.

For example Le Monte Young is a monster piano player:

That's a custom Bosendorfer with the extra octave he's got there tuned in just intonation (rather than tempered).

But he did not set out to be a monster pianist. He was originally drawn to the harmonics of wind blowing through electrical wires in the mid west where he grew up. Over time his obsession with harmonics led him to become quite accomplished.

Fate.

I spent some time reading through the thread too. You guys have me chuckling. I have 4 - 5000 recordings. Paul's headphones probably cost more than my entire system though. Gearheads indeed!

Not that I wouldn't take 'em if he was handing them out.
