FF, i you are astute in pointing out the bust is not the problem, the bubble that led to the bust is the problem.

the root cause is human greed. it is why the people in the wealthiest nation refuse to live within their means. it is why federal government is broke. it is why state and local governments are broke. it is why billionaires continue to lie, cheat and steal to make and extra 50 cents.

the politicians know they *must* play to this greed to get elected... future bust be d*mned.

Earn a $1.00 and spend $1.50. it *is* the American Way.

I agree that this is one crisis the market would have had a shot to clear. The top banks would just go belly up, which might be a good idea.
