Solar with 41-percent efficiency?
By Emma Ritch
Published 2009-01-16 18:01

Researchers from the Freiburg, Germany-based Fraunhofer Institute [1] for Solar Energy Systems say they've developed a solar cell with a record-breaking efficiency of 41.4 percent.

The institute is working with its spin-out Concentrix Solar [2] and with Azur Space of Heilbronn, Germany, to commercialize the high-efficiency solar.

The institute last announced an efficiency breakthrough in September, when researchers reached 39.7 percent efficiency for a III-V multi-junction crystalline silicon cell (see German solar reaches 40-percent efficiency [3]). That broke their previous record of 37.6 percent achieved in March 2008.

The improvement in solar efficiencies is central in helping make solar more market competitive (see Striking up the intermediate band [4]).

The multi-junction solar cell reaching 41.4 percent efficiency was made using III-V-material on gallium-arsenide and germanium substrates. Researchers used amorphous multiple cells to avoid the formation of impurity traps that occur where materials overlap.

The Fraunhofer researchers say they were able to concentrate the impurities in an electrically inactive area of the solar cell.

"This is a good example how the control over crystal defects within semiconducting materials can cause a technological breakthrough," institute manager Eicke Weber told the EE Times.

Light was concentrated on a 5-square-millimeter patch of the cell by a factor of 454.

Gerald Celente seems to be saying that we are not too far away from transferring a huge amount of pain to masses. The unemployed masses already are in pain, the new pain will be borne by still employeed ones whose savings will be vaporized, gold could get confiscated, equities vaporized, and will pay higher and higher for living necessities through dilution and devaluation. What a wonderful choice coming to the populace: be unemployed and take the pain or be employed and take it anyways because the earnings are/will be depleted and don't go far. Don't think the govt can create worthwhile jobs, at this time best thing for them would be to put money in providing unemployement benefit for longer period and let the clearing take place faster and do nothing else. It seems to me the time to move out of cash/bond positions is coming to town, it may be 3-6 months (or even lesser) down the road but is now getting there. When the govt is done with their solution, my suspicion is people will be way worse off than they are today with the current problems and with the onslaught of socialistic clusterf&*K that gets unleashed. The switft action promise should scare people off, it can fail swiftly and massively. I thought initially the deflation may play over the year but the resolve for swift action may cut it sooner. Switft actions usually gets good results when the problem, solution, and environment is clearly understood, which is not possibly the case here
