I grew up eating all the processed stuff in the 60's and 70's but we were also outside a lot, both for organized sports and just kids running around on bikes like kids used to.

I think some of it may have to do with VITAMIN D deprivation

Mushrooms have lots of vitamin D. Dole is introducing a portobello mushroom that provides 100% of recommended daily requirement. Yummmmmm, portobello is sure a lot better than a pill.

This all according to my latest issue of "Fungi". The magazine also says that you can ....." boosts the vitamin D content without compromising freshness or food safety"......in mushrooms with an ordinary flash from a camera! So you can up the 100% allowance by taking pictures of your mushrooms before eating I suppose? I am not making this up - page three of Winter 2008 issue.
