I've thought (increasingly, over several years) that the knee-jerk way a lot of the media uses 'left/right' labels is essentially brain-dead --- nearly devoid of information content. Without considering attitudes toward Authoritarianism (& possibly several other factors as well), it becomes increasingly difficult to make out heads or tails for the players... especially in this era when both major political Parties push for bigger government (though each in their own unique ways...) :-)
