Screw tops are actually better than cork - which can dry out, thus ruining the wine. Cork is also becoming scarce.


Screw tops are ok for commercial wine. Cork or synthetic stoppers are required for a wine to age. A very slight air exchange is necessary for the maturation process to continue beyond a limited extent possible when the wine is bottled. Too much air and the wine oxidizes and it is swiftly ruined.

I have had more than a few bottles with spoiled corks but they are almost always over thirty years old.

Increased wine production throughout the world has in fact put pressure on cork production. There is limited land in Portugal and Morrocco that is suitable for the Cork Oak (Quercus Suber) to grow healthy enough to produce the thick bark that is cork. For some reason little or no land has been devoted to it in the Americas.
