That may be understandable for Hispanics who are escaping abject poverty in Latin America and have a language barrier to overcome, but blacks? Yes, true.....there are still problems. However, the black middle class continues to grow larger each year. More and more blacks graduate high school and go on to college. Slavery was long and it ran deep and went on for over 150 years. It was followed by nearly 100 years of overt discrimination and racism. To expect full recovery in 40 or 50 years is unfair and unrealistic. We have more people of color who are well educated and successful than ever before. So successful that one of them has become president of the entire country. Funny how SilentZ would call that the "exception" rather than the rule. Well educated people of color are still the exception but that's also true of whites. If I remember correctly, only 30% of whites go on to a 4 year college from high school......I couldn't find an actual number in terms of enrollment right out of high school but I found this statistic: "Between the ages of 25 to 29, nearly 37 percent of high-school-educated whites have finished a bachelor’s degree, in comparison to 16 percent of their Hispanic peers. There are no marked generational differences in bachelor’s degree completion among Latino high-school-educated 25-to-29 year-olds (Fry, 2002)." ericdigests.org And these are numbers graduating high school by race: "In the class of 2002, about 78% of white students graduated from high school with a regular diploma, compared to 56% of African-American students and 52% of Hispanic students." wiki.answers.com
